SoftBank Exits Nvidia with $5.8 Billion Sale to Fuel AI Ambitions
SoftBank Group has liquidated its entire $5.83 billion stake in Nvidia, marking its second full exit from the chipmaker since 2019. The 32.1 million share sale in October 2025 funds aggressive AI bets, including a $22.5 billion commitment to OpenAI and $6.5 billion for Ampere Computing.
The divestment contributed to SoftBank's Vision Fund posting a $19 billion quarterly gain, alongside a separate $9.17 billion T-Mobile stake sale. While severing direct equity ties, SoftBank maintains indirect Nvidia exposure through joint AI infrastructure projects like the Stargate data center initiative.
Nvidia shares dipped 0.95% in premarket trading following disclosure of the sale. The transaction underscores how institutional capital rotations between semiconductor and pure-play AI investments are reshaping tech finance landscapes.
